These are the first in a series of information sheets which are being produced by the National Forum for Neuroscience and Special Education

National forum for neuroscience and special education
“Education is concerned with enhancing learning, and neuroscience is concerned with understanding the mechanisms of learning. It seems only logical that one should inform the other.” Professor, Dame Uta Frith, Patron of the National Forum for Neuroscience and Special Education.
This group brings together scientists, teachers and social care professionals to share knowledge, best practice and expertise on special education in the context of neuroscience.
The forum aims to do the following:
- Encourage discourse around the changing pattern of childhood disability
- Share insights from both fields that lead to innovative practice and better learning outcomes for children
- Campaign on issues of interest to the forum (for example, better training for teachers, more support for students with mental health issues and greater flexibility in the school system over ages and class groups).
The group works closely with the autism and girls forum and reports to our SEND sector council. And it is an independent group that we currently serve.
The group was founded in 2011 by Professor Barry Carpenter CBE, Professor Francesca Happé and Dr Rona Tutt OBE (a past president of NAHT). It emerged from discussions about how to facilitate closer working between neuroscientists and those working with children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
On 2nd April, to a packed audience this groundbreaking new book was launched in London. The pages of the book came to life with workshops from each of the contributors, gathered together in the photograph below.
Sheila, the Baroness Hollins, welcomed the book, saying it held promise and opportunity for so many girls and their families.
Girls from Limpsfield Grange School spoke of their experiences of the education system.
The Hollyoaks actress, Talia Grant, and Drama and Art student Grace Dolan , both talked openly of their struggles with mental health, and the lack of acknowledgement of their female presentation of Autism. Both were accompanied to the stage by their Mothers, Carrie Grant ( Broadcaster and Vocal Coach), and Sophie Walker, (Co Founder of the Women’s Equality Party)
From London the book will travel over the coming months for Launch Events in Belfast, Oslo, Barcelona, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Auckland , New Zealand, New York and Dubai.

At nasen live in Birmingham in July , Professor Barry Carpenter , Chair of the National Working Group on Autism in Girls, ( supported by the NAHT) relaunched the Call to Action, as part of his keynote address. This can be downloaded free below.
It has also been announced that a new book ‘ Understanding Autism in Girls (Routledge) will be published late 2018 . The book will feature chapter contributions by members of the National Working Group , and will be edited by Professor Carpenter with Professor Francesca Happe, and Jo Egerton.

There is shared concern among parents, schools, families and professionals about the vulnerability of girls on the Autistic Spectrum. What is emerging is that the presentation of autism in girls is different to boys; yet many of our diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and interventions in education and psychology, are based on research conducted with predominantly male populations. This conference brings together school leaders, teachers, health professionals, parents and carers with high profile speakers and experts, including:
- Carrie Grant, TV vocal coach and campaigner who will give a parent’s perspective.
- Francesca Happé, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and Director of the MRC Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London. Her research focuses on strengths and difficulties in autism spectrum conditions. She is co-founder (with Dr Rona Tutt OBE and Professor Barry Carpenter CBE) of the National Forum for Neuroscience and Special Education.
