The Engagement Model

The Engagement Model is a pivotal framework within the Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Research Project (Carpenter et al, 2015) and is aimed at enhancing pedagogy for children with Complex Needs. The original research was further developed and trialled through the DfE initiated Rochford Review, as a model for statutory summative assessment for pupils ‘not engaged in subject specific learning.

  • Initiation

All five areas emphasise the importance of Engagement in facilitating optimal learning outcomes. This Model encourages educators to adopt a neurodiverse perspective, improving their understanding of the learning pathways for students with special
educational needs and disabilities. Used holistically, The Engagement Model offers pedagogy, formative and statutory summative assessment.

It has much to offer to the ever-diversifying needs of children in our schools, and is a powerful lens for teachers, giving them new insights into how to maximise the learning
potential of every child.
